How to fix an argument with your partner: a calm 5-step reset
15 October 2026 · Fridge+ guides
Every couple argues. What matters is how you come back together afterwards. This five-step reset works for most everyday arguments.
1. Pause before it escalates
When voices rise, agree to stop. Say "I want to sort this out, but I need twenty minutes." Taking a break isn't walking away; it's choosing to come back calmer.
2. Cool down properly
It takes about twenty minutes for your body to settle after a big emotional spike. Use the time to do something soothing, not to rehearse your argument.
3. Listen to understand, not to win
Take turns. One person talks about how they felt, using "I" not "you always". The other repeats back what they heard until the first person says "yes, that's it". Then swap.
4. Own your part
Even if you're mostly right, find the bit that was yours. "I snapped because I was tired, and that wasn't fair" goes a long way.
5. Agree one small change
Don't try to fix everything. Pick one practical thing, like who does the school run on Fridays, and try it for a week.
These tips are for everyday disagreements between equals. If you feel afraid of your partner, controlled or threatened, they aren't the right tool.
