Organising family life as a single parent: one list, one calendar, less on your mind

15 October 2026 · Fridge+ guides

When you're the only adult at home, every detail lands on you: the dentist, the permission slip, the milk, the money. You can't do less, but you can carry less of it in your head. Here's how.

1. Get it out of your head

The tiring part is often remembering, not doing. Put every recurring job, appointment and "don't forget" in one place you trust, on your phone, and stop holding it all in your memory.

2. Plan the week in ten minutes

Pick one quiet moment, maybe Sunday evening, to look at the week ahead: pickups, clubs, appointments and the five dinners that need to happen. Send the ingredients straight to the shopping list, and cook double once so there's a night off later in the week.

3. Give kids routines they own

Morning, after-school and bedtime checklists let children do more without being asked. A simple star chart with a weekly goal turns it into a game, and every job they tick off is one less thing on your list.

4. Ask for specific help

"Let me know if you need anything" rarely turns into help. "Could you do Thursday's pickup?" often does. When grandparents or friends can see the shopping list and the calendar, they can step in without you having to explain everything.

5. Co-parenting across two homes

A shared calendar makes handovers, school events and who-has-the-kids-when clear to both homes, without long message threads. Share what the children need, not your whole life: your budget and your own plans can stay private.

6. Know what's left each month

List your regular bills with their due dates and see what's left over. Small, predictable numbers are easier to plan around than a vague worry.

7. Keep ten minutes for yourself

Put one small thing for you on the list each week, and treat it like any other appointment.

Fridge+ works for single parents too

Shopping, chores, meals, the family calendar, bills and kids' routines all work with one adult. Kids' profiles are free. One plan covers you plus one more person with their own phone, like a teenager or a grandparent, and the family plan adds up to 4 more. +together, the couples’ space, is optional: choose “just me and the kids” when you set up, or hide it any time in Settings → You and your partner.

If co-parenting doesn't feel safe

These tips are for everyday co-parenting. If you feel afraid of a former partner, don't share your calendar or location with them. In an emergency in Canada, call 911, or contact a support line such as the Assaulted Women's Helpline in Ontario (1-866-863-0511). See our support page.
