Long-distance couples: how to stay close across the miles and time zones
22 October 2026 · Fridge+ guides
Distance is hard on the little things: the good-night, the "how was your day", knowing when it's a good moment to call. You can't shrink the miles, but you can make the time between visits feel shared. Here's what helps.
1. Know their time, always
A lot of long-distance friction is about timing: calling as they fall asleep, texting during their meeting. Keep their local time where you can see it, and work out the window when you're both awake.
2. Always have the next visit on the calendar
A date to count down to changes how the weeks feel. Book the next visit before this one ends, even if it's months away, and count down together.
3. Keep small daily rituals
A good-morning message timed for their morning, a good-night for their night, one question a day you both answer. Little and often beats one long call when you're both tired.
4. Plan dates you can do apart
Cook the same recipe on a video call, watch a film in sync, play a quiz about each other, or plan your next trip in detail. It's still a date if you're on different continents.
5. Share the boring stuff too
Long-distance couples often only share highlights. Tell them about the dentist, the laundry, the annoying colleague. Ordinary life is what you'll share when you're together again.
6. Agree how you'll handle a hard day
Arguments over text go wrong fast. Agree now that serious things wait for a call, and that either of you can ask for a pause. Our five-step reset works at a distance too.
7. Keep what you share private
Share your time zone and your plans, not your location. Feeling close shouldn't mean being tracked.
In +together, the long-distance features show the time where your partner is, the best time to call while you're both awake, and a countdown to your next visit. After a visit, add a memory or plan the next one. Quick good-morning and good-night notes appear when it’s morning or night where they are, and the Long distance pack adds rituals and questions for couples apart. Time zones only, never your location. +together is a private space just for the two of you.
